My name is Valdir, I am an undergraduate student at UFMG, where I am taking a language course with major in English. In the last two years, I worked as an English teacher at Microlins and last year at Coltec. It was a good experience, it made me grow significantly, professionally speaking, although I still do not consider myself totally ready for working as a teacher. Despite the good experiences lived in the recent past, I am considering the possibility of being a translator, or maybe, a portuguese teacher, because of my deep interest in my mother language. Since I am still in the fourth semester, I hope the future semesters will guide me into making a wise choice. As for the discipline, my expectations are that I truly improve my writing skills, which is something on which I need to work more.
Hello, I am Gabriel Santos, I am 19 years old. I started the Languages course at UFMG in the second semester of 2010. When I say that I take this major, many people think that my purpose is to become a teacher, but that is a mistake. In my case, I am studying to become a translator. I had some experience being a teacher in a project called EDUCONLE, that involves giving classes to teachers from public schools. It was good but it's not what I want to do for living. During the summer, I worked as a translator in the Cirque Du Soleil show Varekai. It was an amazing experience and I want to continue in the area. During this course I expect to learn how to use the internet in my favor to produce good texts, what will someday help me in the translator career. I have always enjoyed using digital tools in my studies and now I am learning even more.
I am professor Vivian Margutti. I have a doctorate in Comparative Literature and a master’s degree in Literary Theory, both from UFMG. I started my career as an English teacher 20 years ago. I have taught courses in schools, and also as a private teacher. Since last year, I have been working as a visiting professor in the College of Languages and Literature at UFMG. Although I initially focused on the area of literary studies, due to my recent experience with undergraduate teaching, I now have a growing interest in applied linguistics. My intention is to start conducting research in the area of language and technology.Listen to my biodata here
My name is Isabella Melano, I am 21 years old and I have been studying Social Communications at UFMG since 2009. Before I had even begun college I knew that I wanted to graduate in Journalism. However, since my graduation gives me the possibility of applying for another major, I have now, at my sixth period, decided to also major in Radio and Television, as soon as I get my journalism degree. I have chosen to get both degrees because I have always intended to work on television newscast.
I am currently in an internship at UFMG Television, where I work as producer, reporter and presenter. It has been a great experience so far. It is amazing to work on something you love. I am so passionate about television journalism, that I have ve chosen it as the subject of my monograph, when I graduate. Since I am going to the USA on an exchange program next semester I intend to start writing my essay there. My research consists in a comparison between how the main international events are brodcasted by the Brazilian nightly newscast, Jornal Nacional, and by an American one. My focus on this project will be journalism fictionality - my favourite area of study. After I graduate, I would like to work on television, whether as a producer, reporter or editor. Unfortunately Television Journalism is a very competitive area, thus I would not mind working for other vehicles such as newspapers or magazines.
My name is Marcela de Oliveira e Silva and I am an undergraduate student of Languages at UFMG, majoring in English teaching. Before starting, I studied Biology for two years and a half. Nevertheless, I changed majors after I began teaching at the English school where I had studied for ten years, realizing I would rather follow that career. Since then, besides teaching English to students of different levels, I have learned much about this language through Linguistics and Literary studies. At this point of my course, that is, my fourth semester, I am very interested in Medieval English and Welsh Literature, although I am also taking part in a Linguistics project that describesthe Portuguese spoken in Minas Gerais. In addition, this semester I joined Cenex FALE as a trainee to teach English under professors' supervision. From now on, I intend to keep on learning about and practicing teaching processes and methods. Furthermore, I intend to participate in research on Medieval Literature and interchange programs.
My name is Ana Carolina Oliveira Ribeiro, I am 20 years old and I am an undergradute student at UFMG, where I have been studying English teaching. It is my 4th semester and I am really enjoying being here at FALE. I am on my 5th semester. I intend to work with publishing and translation, I do not want to be a teacher. On the last three months, I lived and worked in the USA to improve my English and gain experience. When in the USA, I worked in Walt Disney World Resort. My main function there was merchandising, but what I did most was help with language problems, because lots of brazilians went to Disney World without speaking any English, this experience made me think that simultaneous translation may be an interesting area to work with. In this class I expect to improve my writing skills.

I have only worked twice as an English teacher for members of my family and as a test applicator at UFMG entrance test of 2012. I have not taken any English course. My major interest in teaching is to develop the use of arts such as music, movies, drawning, painting in my teaching, so I hope to be able to research about it.

My principal aim during this exchange is to improve my Portuguese. However, as an English student, I also have to keep practising my English, as well as improve my writing skills; that is the reason why I am attending this course of Academic Writing. Even though I am graduating in Languages and Literature, my major in Italy is slightly different from the brazilian one, because it includes exams of Geography, Sociology and Turism. For this reason, my future plan is to do a master in Turism and, later on, work in this area. My name is Thais El Malih Vieira and I am 19 years old. My name is Giselle Mara Teixeira Reis, I am 23 years old and I´m an undergraduate student of Law at FUMEC, and I also study Languages at UFMG, majoring in English teaching. It´s not easy to take two major simultaneously. Specially because I never have sufficient time to study for tests. I wished the day had 26 hours a day, so I could dedicate more time on my studies. But I can't complain, because I simply love doing what I do! The down side to that all is that I´m still not sure of what I want to do for a living. My family advise me to try a public contest, but my heart says differently. I believe that you have to love Law if you want to pursue a career as a public servant. That is not my case, although it is very interesting and open minding. Is very interesting an open minding, but that's all for me. I had an English teaching experience at Cultura Inglesa which made me fall in love with teaching. I taught kids from 7 to 10 years old and it was amazing to see how fast and effortless they learned! As much as I loved teaching there, I had to leave because of my time issue. I intend to graduate in Law school by the end of this year, so that I can fully dedicate my time to study English. I hope that by that time I will know for sure what to do with my career.

I really believe that in this major you can improve not only your english or your teaching skills, but also you can become a better human being, more and conscious of your powerful function in society. I intend to take another major when I finish my experience at FALE, because I would like to have academic knowledge in more than one specific area. I studied Spanish for a while, but it was many years ago. During my major, I decided not to focus only on English, but also to explore other languages in order to expand my future oportunities, especially concerning my academic life.
